Vernon Ah Kee is one of the leading contemporary indigenous artists in Australia. Ah Kee was born in North Queensland and is of
the Kuku Yalandji, Waanji, Yidindji and Gugu Yimithirr people. He has been living in Brisbane for much of his professional life. His work is primarily concerned with black/white politics incorporating elements of (black) humour and wry wit to make incisive commentary on race relationships.
Ah Kee’s early drawings of portraits were developed from anthropology ‘mug shots’ of members of his family, taken by the ethnographer, Norman Tindale. Since 2008, Ah Kee’s portraits have become more ambiguous – where facial features emerge from fields of white. This body of work, which the artist has titled Unwritten, is closely related to his major installation Born into this Skin (2008), a standout work on Cockatoo Island as part of the 2008 Sydney Biennale.
In 2009 he was included in a group exhibition at the Venice Biennale as part of Australia’s representation. He has exhibited widely throughout Australia and internationally and his work is held in major state and national collections in Australia, including National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; National Gallery of Victoria,
Melbourne; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
